Engine Numbers

Post by 12jslater » Sat Jun 27, 2026 7:10 am

I've just acquired an Austin 10 Cambridge, the car has an earlier head and manifold so I have reason to believe the engine is earlier/ not correct.

How can a Cambridge engine be told apart from an earlier engine from say a Lichfield?

Thanks!

Hi
When introduced in August 1936 the Cambridge had a sidedraught Zenith carburettor and manifold to match, also I believe 18mm plug head. The change to the downdraught Zenith and manifold occurred in November 1936. According to the Index cards this took place at chassis No G105479 (Car No G/RL 105479).

There is an engine number on the RH side of the block stamped into a flat piece of the casting near the top just underneath the head gasket. It will be prefixed 1G Original engine numbers are usually close in number to the chassis numbers, usually higher but sometimes lower perhaps due to the engine failing its quality control checks first time around and being fed back onto the main production line after being fixed. Early Cambridge engines are approx 1G97*** and appear to overlap in numbers with the last Lichfield and Sherbourne models.

That said I have known of more than one Cambridge that have been fitted with earlier engines.
Hope this helps

Hi,
The only thing I can add to Peter's post is that the inlet/exhaust manifold studs are not the same for sidedraft and downdraft carbs - the downdraft has 2 shorter studs in place of 2 long ones. The cylinder blocks of all 10s have a casting date, either below the distributor or near the oil filler e.g. 10.5.6 10th May 1936. Post July '35 the cylinder blocks did not change until early '38.
Well done getting a 10. Hope it goes well.
Cheers
